The trio-slash-duo finally lets loose some details on their newest project.

The trio-slash-duo finally lets loose some details on their newest project.

Yesterday, Von Pea from the Brooklyn/Cincinnati group Tanya Morgan announced that after a brief hiatus, the group will be returning, announcing a new EP that’s expected to drop in the next few months.

“#Donsgonnakillme,” ‘Pea wrote on Twitter after revealing information about the record, in reference one of the group’s other members, Donwill.

After originally announcing the details — Tanya Morgan’s You & What Army?! EP is slated to be released sometime in September or possibly early October — he confirmed them with a post on his blog.

“There isn’t much to tell about it yet because its still being worked on but its along the lines of what we always do but with more maturity,” wrote ‘Pea. “The title means, in so many words, we’re not letting obstacles stop us from keeping it moving.”

The group recently announced that Ilyas would have a reduced role in their next efforts. They later clarified that there was no beef or ill-will between the members and that Ilyas may return more prominently on future releases.

You & What Army?! will mark the group’s first crew effort since their critically-acclaimed 2009 release, Brooklynati. In 2010, Von Pea and Donwill each released solo offerings titled Pea’s Gotta Have It and Don Cusack In High Fidelity, respectively.

Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming Tanya Morgan release.

That's what we hear -- both halves of Outkast are currently planning to release solo efforts before the years out.

That’s what we hear — both halves of Outkast are currently planning to release solo efforts before the years out.

According to a report from HipHopWired, both Andre 3000 and Big Boi of the group Outkast are currently working on solo records, which are slated for release sometime in late 2011.

“Both Dre and Big are working on solo projects; they want those out by the end of 2011,” said unnamed source that HipHopWired is calling both “a rock solid industry contact” and in “close contact” with the duo.

The report also stated that the two will rejoin to release a new Outkast album in early 2012. “Outkast is on track to release a new album by early next year,” said their source.

Although there has been talk for years about a solo record from Andre 3000, this seems to be the first legitimate confirmation of any sort of timeline for the release. It also seems to follow in step with what the two Outkast MCs have previously stated, which is that they each planned to release solo efforts before following up with a new group album.

Big Boi has said that he will follow up his well-received 2010 solo effort, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, by taking on another of his alter-egos in an album he’s titled Daddy Fat Sax: Soul Funk Crusader.

Both ‘Dre’s solo and the next Outkast album — which will be their first since 2006′s Idlewild — have yet to be titled.

These releases will mark the first solo effort for Andre 3000, Big Boi’s sophomore solo effort and Outkast’s seventh studio album.

More information on these releases will be offered as it becomes available.

Statik Selektah took to Twitter last week to reveal that he’s currently working with Boston native, Reks. The duo, he said, is gearing up to release a three-part collaborative album, with each installment containing five tracks.

“[In] the lab with Reks,” Statik Selektah wrote. “[Me] and him got [a] 3part album, ‘Straight No Chaser’ dropping soon, 5 songs at a time. Stay tuned.”

Straight No Chaser is slated to follow in a string of non-conventional records to come from Statik Selektah and his ShowOff Records camp. Most recently, the producer worked with California rapper Freddie Gibbs to create an EP within 24 hour hours, later releasing Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away digitally on his ShowOff imprint. In addition, Statik is also currently working on a mixtape with La Coka Nostra’s Slaine, titled State of Grace. It’s currently scheduled for a release within the next couple of weeks.

Reks recently released his third solo album, Rhythmic Eternal King Supreme (R.E.K.S.), in March of 2011, which featured production from Statik Selektah in addition to numerous well-known beatsmiths.

More information on their collaborative effort as it becomes available.

It seems that we may be finally seeing the beginning phases of the release for the collaborative album.

It seems that we may be finally seeing the beginning phases of the release for the collaborative album.

Yesterday, Brooklyn-based label Nature Sounds took to Twitter to drop some hints about the long-anticipated collaborative album from rappers (MF) DOOM and Ghostface Killah. The project, that has supposedly been in the works for years, now appears to be coming to fruition, based on the comments from the imprint.

“I promise there will be a #DOOMSTARKS sighting in one weeks time,” the label posted on their Twitter last night.

The comment, although not confirmed as of press time, appears to be referencing to the highly-anticipated collaborative album from DOOM and Wu-Tang Clan member, Ghostface Killah, which was previously said to be titled Swift & Changeable. This announcement is the latest in what has been a long and storied adventure for the collaborative work, which was originally revealed to be in the works in 2006 and slated for a release in 2007.

Since this initial announcement, fans have clamored for the effort to finally see the light of day, but to no avail. Both rappers — as well as the Nature Sounds imprint — have been consistently vague on the project, with details and timelines changing repeatedly over the course of the last few years.

Fan were delighted, however, to get a preview for the effort in 2009. On DOOM’s most-recent solo effort, Born Like This, the track “Angelz” featured Ghostface Killah, which was later revealed to be a part of their larger collaborative work.

DoomStarks appears to be the official collaborative moniker of the two artists, a name that DOOM used for the record in a 2007 video with Just V-D-B blog.

While no release date is announced at this time, it does seem likely that if the label is preparing to release the record’s first single, that we could see an official album announcement in the very near future.

For the latest on the DoomStarks project, stay tuned. More information will be published as it become available.

The producer has some choice words about the release, which aren't mean with kind by 'Ye's label.

The producer has some choice words about the release, which aren’t met with kind by ‘Ye’s label.

This week, Flying Lotus took to his Twitter to express his disappointment over a highly-anticipated record. That record, Big Sean’s Finally Famous debut, was released under the G.O.O.D. Music imprint, which after catching wind of the comments, had some choice words for Fly Lo.

“This Big Sean album is not sweet,” tweeted Flying Lotus on Wednesday. “I dunno why I try to like this stuff.” He continued, calling out elements that he called more of the same. “Same wack ass [post-Drake] cadence, talking about the same shit i heard in the last rap album i bought(nothing). [More Autotune. [More] snare repeat,” the producer wrote, bemoaning the album. “I want my time back!”

After his initial short rant, the person behind G.O.O.D. Music’s Twitter account caught wind of the criticism, addressing Fly Lo directly. “You are not a hip-hop fan, & [that's] fine,” wrote the label, founded by Kanye West, “but focus on improving your own craft rather than hating on a different young artist.”

Flying Lotus, a well-known hip hop producer, seemed to take the jab in stride, replying, “I am hip hop! I just care too much, that’s all. Don’t worry I paid for the shitty album, so the joke is really on me anyway.”

“No, [you're] not,” wrote back G.O.O.D., “Hip-hop is from all perspectives. It is close minded & immature to hate on what you [don't] understand or relate to.”

With that final statement, the short altercation seemed to close. Flying Lotus re-tweeted messages of support from a few fans and ended by tweeting, humorously, “Gonna go focus on improving my craft(s) now.. Sending love.”

Big Sean’s Finally Famous debuted in stores on June 28 and has been met with a mixed degree of praise and criticism. Although many media outlets — including XXL, Rolling Stone and HipHopDX.com — have given the album relatively high marks, many have rebuked the Detroit native’s release, often citing its lack of originality.

“[Nothin'] impressed me that much, the production far outshines the lyricism and flow on this album,” wrote one commenter on HipHopDX.com.

Flying Lotus, a prolific producer, released two records in 2010 — the full-length Cosmogramma and an EP titled Grid+Pattern World. He also released alternative tracks from Cosmogramma in a release titled Cosmogramma Alt Takes, which could be accessed online by scanning in a photo of the original album and it’s cover art as a code.

He’s currently slated to be working on numerous collaborative projects, as well as continuing to work on solo material.

K-Salaam and Beatnick this week announced their involvement with dead prez’s M1, releasing behind-the-scene footage featuring the rapper speaking on the motivation behind the new effort.

“K-Salaam and Beatnick resonate with what dead prez is doing because we’re international hip-hop artists who are able to see the world from many angles,” M1 says about working with the duo that has worked with Saigon, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and many others. “Being part of the Brooklyn and down South and Jamaica and everywhere else in the world that has given my influence and my partner the same, we want to chime in about the so-called Middle East and what’s going on.”

He continues by reflecting on specific tracks that the three artists have put together, addressing the subject of war and relating military combat to crime and street violence. “[They're] using the same guns that they’re using over here,” M1 says in the footage.

The to-be-titled release appears to be heavily influenced by political and social issues — a hallmark of M1 and dead prez’s growing discography.

At this time, there are no details as to the nature or timetable for the effort. Watch the behind-the-scenes footage below.

The Chi-town rapper jumps from Kanye's label back onto a major.

The Chi-town rapper jumps from Kanye’s label back onto a major.

According to a report released this week on XXLMag.com, rapper Common recently inked a deal with Warner Brothers Records, agreeing to release his next album on their imprint, rather than Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music.

“A source close to the deal has confirmed with us that the Chicago rapper/actor will be releasing his next record on Warner,” wrote the site, breaking the news story.

The forthcoming record, which Common has announced will be titled The Dreamer, The Believer, will mark the first album released off of Kanye’s label since his 2002 release, Electric Circus. Although his previous albums put out on G.O.O.D. Music (Be, Finding Forever, Universal Mind Control) have each been backed by Geffen Records — a subsidiary of Universal Music Group — this move appears to be a full-fledged departure.

It’s unclear at this time whether Kanye’s imprint will play any role in the album — which does not have a release date at this time — or what factors led up to the move. The rapper/actor has yet to make any public comment on the situation.

Stay tuned for more information on Common’s The Dreamer, The Believer, as it becomes available.

DJ Premier — clad in a Cold Crush Brothers tee — discusses his upcoming collaborations and projects, revealing more artists for his album with Pete Rock.

In a recent interview with Splash Mag, DJ Premier spoke briefly on the projects that he may be working on in the future. Among those he mentioned was the storied friendly battle album, DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock, and while discussing the album, he revealed additional guests that he’ll feature on the record.

“Six tracks produced by Pete [Rock], six tracks produced by me,” Premo told the site, explaining the concept behind the record — a friendly battle between two of hip hop’s most esteemed and respected producers.

He went on to reveal two new guests for the album, The Beatnuts and Sheek Louch, who are new additions to the previously-announced inclusion of Wu-Tang’s GZA, who will also make an appearance on the record.

In addition, DJ Premier also gave his opinion on other musicians, including one of rap’s most recent success stories, Tyler, The Creator. The interviewer played him part of the Tyler’s track “Yonkers”, which Premo seemed to recognize instantly. He continued, calling the Odd Future MC, “dope”.

Details about the DJ Premier and Pete Rock release still remain scant, although it does appear that the two are making progress on the record. At this time, an official release date has yet to be announced.
