The First 5 with JC Poppe

JCPoppeFull

JC Poppe is an independent hip-hop artist hailing from the “Cream City” of Wisconsin, better known as Milwaukee. His goal? To create influential and enduring music in hopes of impregnating quality back into hip-hop. JC released his debut album titled Sleep Therapy during the tail-end of last year on record label The Grown Man Collective. Check out this raw and aggressive artist’s answers to our First 5.

You can pick up Sleep Therapy from CD Baby ($8) and/or stream the album for free on Bandcamp.

1. Tell us something nobody knows about you.

I’ve touched Michelle Branch’s butt… It was by accident when I was posing with her for a picture at a meet and greet event for Milwaukee’s Summerfest (the world’s largest music festival…no lie, it really is). I meant to put my hand on the small of her back and misjudged so it landed on her right booty cheek. She gave me a look and a little smirk like “Ok, you’ve had your fun, now move it”. Funny side note, my friend who was with me gave her his phone number asked her to kick it after her show was done.

2. What do you want people to take away from your music?

I want people to be energized by my music. I would love for them to take the passion that I put into making the music and apply it to their life. Music is often an emotional experience, so I’d love for people to take that ride with me every time they hear my album.  I think that’s the key to making an album…making something so engaging that the listener feels part of the experience.

3. What is one of your biggest regrets?

My biggest regret is quitting football my junior year of high school because I hated the coaches.  I would blow out my left knee the next year playing basketball after school one day and if I would’ve known that was coming I would’ve just sucked it up and dealt with their bullshit. Ah, the cockiness and lack of maturity of a 17 year old boy.

4. What’s one of your greatest hip-hop memories?

My favorite hip-hop related memory is cracking open the boxes to dig out a physical copy of my very first album. All the work and love that went into the creation of the album was finally there, in my hand, as a finished entity. It was so dope.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself with around 3 albums under my belt and now managing some really talented artists while working on shooting music videos and doing photography and promo for people around the country through Grown Man Collective, a “company” that consists of myself, Kumays, and Jank One.
