The First 5 with D-Sisive

D-Sisive is a Juno Award-nominated Canadian hip-hop artist signed to URBNET Records. Since first emerging in the late 90’s with a handful of independent releases, he has since unleashed the 2008 Juno-nominated EP, The Book, the 2009 Polaris Music Prize-nominated Let The Children Die and the critically acclaimed free album Jonestown (2009), not to mention numerous singles and collaborations. He was also kind enough to take part in the latest edition of aboveGround Magazine’s weekly Q&A, “The First 5”! Check out his answers below.
1. Tell us something nobody knows about you?
I can hum every single note played on Harry Connick Jr.’s album “25″. No lie. I was obsessed with that album for a year straight. My mother took me to see him at Exhibition Place and I lost my shit like a girl at a Maxi Priest concert…or whatever the kids are listening to nowadays.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
Anything, as long as listeners take something. The worst thing you can do is make mediocre disposable music that evokes nothing. Fuck that. There’s nothing worse than a 3/5. “It’s ok!”, that’s my worst nightmare. I want you to either love it or loathe it.
3. What is one of your biggest regrets?
My meaningless pseudonym and it’s ridiculous spelling. It was cool when I was 17. Not so much at 29. A few years ago I wanted to cut the ‘Sisive’ and just run with D- (Dee Hyphen). Thought it was a great idea until I realized it was a failing grade.
4. What is your greatest memory in hip-hop?
Performing “Nobody With A Notepad” at Roy Thomson Hall with Muneshine for the Socan Awards. A crowd of suits. Geddy Lee. Tom Cochrane. ‘Stomping’ Tom Connors. Quite the trip. My DJ, Dirtyman, was going to wear trackpants during the performance. He’s raw like that. Fortunately, we made a stop at Wal Mart for jeans. Black Rustlers. Not even authentic Wranglers.
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Doing exactly what I’m doing now. Only not living in a basement. And wearing dress shirts more. Possibly dress pants. Smoking cigarettes. And stealing a lot. Stealing from children. They’re not fast runners. Trust me.
