The First 5 with Sab
This week’s First 5 is with Rhymesayers co-founder Sab, formerly known as Beyond. Check out his thoughts on our First 5!
1. Tell us something no one knows about you.
Um, I’m in a way a recluse person. This is not that easy for me, but let’s see what people probably might not guess. Musically my favorite artist is David Bowie. Tennis is my favorite sport to play. I like singing karaoke. I’ve never done cocaine, but I have tripped acid.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
I want my music to be influential in a positive way emotionally for people. Most of all I wanna make people feel good from listening to my music. And I want people to respect the quality of music I make. I want people to appreciate and recognize the artistry and time I put into my music. I want people to appreciate my versatility and range. I want to be acknowledged as an artist, outside of any genre. I want my music to relate to people from all walks of life.
3. What is one of your biggest regrets?
I’ve made many mistakes which I feel I have rectified with those whom were impacted by my misdeeds, but I have no regrets.
4. What’s one of your greatest hip-hop memories?
I have many, but one I just spoke of was the album release party for Comparison in 1996. It was our first Rhymesayers release and the energy in the building was incredible. That was the beginning of my career, yet it feels as if I’m just nearing my prime and reflecting on what that day has sparked is fascinating. History repeats itself.
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years I will be with my family, standing before the podium at the Grammy’s accepting my award and thanking my friends and peers.
