The First 5 with Bisco Smith

Bisco Smith, a.k.a. Bisc1, has called Brooklyn, NY home for the past decade and began making a name for himself by way of graffiti, DJ’ing, performing live and dropping mixtapes. Between, EP’s, LP’s and mixtapes Bisco’s put 6 albums under his belt in only 4 years which has earned him recognition and respect in the indie hip-hop scene not only for quantity, but more importantly, quality.

Another medium that has garnered him attention and credibility is art work. Not only has he headed art direction for labels such as Ninja Tune, Nature Sounds, Embedded Music, the now defunct Definitive Jux and more, he’s also created cover art and promotional materials to boot.

Bisco Smith shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, however aboveGround Magazine was able to slow him down just enough for him to answer our First 5.

1. Tell us something no one knows about you.

I can bust a mean six step into a killer backspin… Haha!

2. What do you want people to take away from your music?

Inspiration, I want the listeners to go and make their own things happen. Whatever that may be. Chase the dream and keep the energy moving.

3. What is one of your biggest regrets?

It’s safe to say I have none. I don’t believe in the theory of regret. Right now things are so fresh, all the negatives and the positives got me here right now.

Maybe I wish I still kept on the skateboard. Who knows though, the spring and summer are coming.

4. What’s one of your greatest hip-hop memories?

It’s hard to pick just one. Overall, building with people that inspired me from years back on creative things in the present. People like The Video Graff crew, Lee, Phase 2, El-P. Cats like that.

If I had to pick one specific memory I might say the release show for my newest project The Broadcast was so perfect musically, that might be the high point of the shows for me.

Being on the road is also a high that’s untouched.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In a fresh studio working on designs, beats, paintings and tunes. Traveling overseas more. Still with home base in Brooklyn.

Really, same scenario as today. Just bigger, better, and more creative.

Oh yeah, with a spot on the west to break out to every now and then would be ill too.
