The First 5 with Jade Fox

The abundance of quality independent hip-hop emerging from Baltimore, Maryland in the recent years has given new life to the city’s nickname, “Charm City”. We caught up with Jade Fox, a multiracial female emcee that is determined to push herself to be the best there is. With a style that is always evolving, she claims that she “offers a different look and sound than what is presented in today’s market”. Take a look at her answers for our First 5 questions.

1.Tell us something nobody knows about you?
I was extremely shy as a child. It scared the hell out of me to talk to other people, even other kids. Safe to say I grew out of that, quick.
2.What do you want people to take away from your music?
A connection. I think that’s lacking in music today. So much is made of an image nowadays that a real connection isn’t common with artists. I think the vulnerability aspect is gone for a lot of artists, for someone whose a fan, that’s easy to relate to. I personally can’t connect with owning 5 cars and blowing money, but I can relate to someone talking about going through some shit, even if it’s various situations.
3.What is one of your biggest regrets?
No regrets, I believe everything happens for a reason. I will say I did a lot of partying in my younger years, and that probably wasted a lot of time.
4.What is your greatest memory in hip-hop?
Hearing “Brenda’s Got A Baby” by Tupac. That song really opened my eyes to hip hop being an avenue as a voice for the voiceless. I also saw Lauryn Hill a couple of times live, once with Outkast opening, the other with the Roots opening, those were great of examples of live hip hop.
5.Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Touring with a great live show. A couple of more albums under my belt and creating some kick ass music. I would like to get to the point where I’m working with orchestra’s, horns sections, etc. on tracks. Just consistently evolving creatively.
