1. Animal Farm – Culture Shock
The Portland five-some teams up with a hand full of well-known artists such as Talib Kweli, DJ Rob Swift and Abstract Rude for the release of their newest effort, Culture Shock. Sticking to a tried and tested formula of boom-bap beats and thoughtful, strong lyrics, the group puts forth an effort worth checking.
2. Edo G – A Face In The Crowd
Legendary hip hop veteran Edo G returns to the limelight with a release in celebration of his two-decade long career. Enlisting an energetic pack of a-list production from names like Statik Selektah and DJ Premier, Ed’s newest effort should be the perfect reintroduction for the seasoned veteran MC.
3. J Rawls – Hip-Hop Affect
The battle-tested producer calls in a huge number of favors from MCs such as Sadat X, El Da Sensei, John Robinson, Copywrite and Edo G. The Ohio native who came up laying soundscapes on Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s legendary Black Star album also laces his own raps over his patented production stylings.
4. Neek The Exotic and Large Professor – Still On The Hustle
Up-and-coming MC teams up with legendary MC/producer Large Professor for the two’s first collaborative effort. Featuring appearances from Joel Ortiz, Marco Polo and more, the album serves as a lasting testament to the golden-era sound that’s become so coveted amongst hip hop afficianados.
5. MC Lars – 21 Concepts (A Hit Ain’t One)
If you’re more into the nerd-focused rap, then MC Lars delivers. Rapping about a variety of every-day geekery, Lars’ effort stikes a balance between keyboard jockeys and street culture.
