Out This Week: Astronautalis, Bronze Nazareth, Das Racist, Superstar Quamallah & DeQawn, Qwazaar & Batsauce
A number of notable releases this week covering a wide swathe of hip hop sub-genres and sounds.
Astronautalis – This Is Our Science
Fake Four, Inc plays home to the latest release from the highly-acclaimed Seattle-by-way-of-Florida rapper. The MC returns with a short (11 tracks) album full of gruff, introspective, break-neck raps. Heavily inspired by indie rock, punk and electronic genres, Astronautalis’s newest record is a decidedly eclectic collection of songs for fans of artists like P.O.S., Macklemore, El-P and others.
Superstar Quamallah & DeQawn – Talkin’ All That Jazz
Funky and refreshingly reminiscent of the early-era break-beat-driven rap of yesteryear, Superstar Quamallah and DeQawn team up with producer Izznyce to concoct jazz sample-informed album — complete with full instrumentals. It’s serious at times while holding onto the fun edge that one would expect on such an array of aged breaks and samples.
Qwazaar & Batsauce – Bat Meets Blaine
Typical Cats’s Qwazaar teams up with producer Batsauce once again for a rowdy, head-nodding rap album that’s full of conscious and socially-aware raps on top of catchy, crisp beats. The 14-track album carries a noticeably lighter tone than some of their previous works, but still contains tracks that have an inherent weighty-ness to them.
Das Racist – Relax
The experimental pop-rap group Das Racist releases their official studio debut, Relax. Amazon calls their album, “almost exactly like Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in every conceivable way,” which seems a bit far-fetched. Regardless, fans of the borderline shock rap antics that Das Racist has built their brand around are likely to be equally pleased with their debut record, full of fluffy instrumentals and off-the-cuff lyrical calamity.
Bronze Nazareth – School For The Blindman
Although the term “Wu-Tang affiliate” often requires a grain of salt in a world where every rapper would gladly ride the Clan’s coat tails into stardom, Bronze Nazareth’s affiliation with the NY legends is clear and apparent. Not only does his album School For The Blind feature appareances from nearly all of the core members of Wu, but the self-produced backdrops for each of the tracks feel right at home under the undeniably-Wu flag.
