Stephan Gray Makes Grynch’s Volvo Come to Life
Adam Sandler and Sir Mix-a-Lot beware, you aren’t the only artists proud of your shitty ride. Seattle emcee Grynch is ready to show off his silver 1986 Volvo 240DL to the world, as he and producer Stephan Gray release the video for “My Volvo” from Grynch’s 2009 free release, Chemistry. The video to match Grynch’s ode to his whip is easily on par with any visuals for “Piece of Shit Car” or “My Hooptie”, and Stephan Gray is the one who worked the cinematic magic to make Grynch’s ride extra glamorous — in that so-ugly-only-a-mother-could-love-it kind of way.
Gray, of Gray Matters Productions, is a 26-year-old filmmaker. He’s worked in television and filmed footage for the Washington Huskies basketball team and the Seattle Seahawks. This is the second Seattle hip-hop music video from the Gonzaga-alum. Gray handled the camera for Fresh Espresso’s “Big or Small” video in November, which made rounds on MTV’s network and gained both local and cyber acclaim.
Prior to meeting P.Smoov (of Fresh Espresso), through Seattle radio station KEXP, Gray was just a fan of the Seattle hip-hop scene. Now he’s making the music come to life.
With the internet becoming so important to the success of music, Gray thinks music videos hold even more weight. “Music videos are integral to the music experience, and a lot of people see music videos before hearing the songs. I think [music videos] have changed because there are so many platforms, MTV doesn’t carry the weight that it used to.”
Gray and Grynch met when filming the “Something New” remix, a P.Smoov-produced track. “My Volvo” is Grynch’s first video, and the rapper says Gray, “definitely has a vision for what he wants to do, that always makes [the process] easier.”
Grynch thinks that Gray’s work is here to stay; “I can guarantee people will be seeing a lot more of his work around the town,” he told aboveGround.
And Gray’s just as excited to be involved. “This is a great year for Seattle music, I’m just glad to be a part of it,” he said while filming “My Volvo”.
