New Madvillain Album for 2011?
The dubious duo may be cooking up a follow-up to their heralded underground cult classic, but for now we’ll only be getting a taste for what’s to come.
On the 64th installment of Stones Throw’s weekly podcast series, the LA-based label unearthed a series of gems that MF Doom and Madlib fans have been hankering for for years. Two new tracks — or, perhaps track snippets — from Madvillain, the combined moniker of the two acclaimed artists, were revealed for the first time.
Titled “Avalanche” and “Victory Lap”, the two tracks take up a combined time of two minutes and fifteen seconds, which may mean that they’re only partial pieces of longer tracks meant for an upcoming LP. But, Stones Throw has yet to clarify any details about the new songs.
The label, however, did hint that there may be a fresh release from the duo sometime within the next year. After posting a still-photo video for the two new songs, the label wrote on their website, “Here’s clips from the two new Madvillain tracks taken from the beginning of Stones Throw podcast #64, a look at the year ahead for Stones Throw.”
It’s unclear whether these comments (“a look at the year ahead”) refers to the entire podcast’s theme or is used in reference to these two tracks in particular. Stones Throw was unavailable for immediate comment.
Doom and Madlib are highly-revered in many circles for their 2004 release, Madvillainy, which brought together ‘lib’s blunt-soaked rhythms and Doom’s drug-addled ramblings for one of Stones Throw’s most successful releases to date.
The follow-up, 2008′s Madvillainy 2, did little to subside the cries for another new record as it consisted only of remixed versions of the original tracks.
Since then, there have been murmurs of another album in the works from Madvillain, and Stones Throw reportedly said as much sometime in 2009. In May of 2010, the track “Papermill” was released for free via the Adult Swim website. This time, however, it seems as though the album may be planned for release sometime in 2011. But, these details have yet to be confirmed.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available and check out the two new songs from Madvillain below.
