GZA: ‘Liquid Swords 2′ on Hold, Another Album On the Way
The Genius is getting back in the lab, but isn’t quite ready to put together the follow-up to his most highly-regarded album — yet.
After a series of tweets from the Clansman, it seems clear that the MC will be producing a new album sometime in the near future. For some fans, though, it will come as a disappointment to find out that it won’t be the sequel to his sophomore album.
“Ready to get in the lab to record this next album,” GZA tweeted last week. To many, it was probably assumed to be a reference to the much-anticipated Liquid Swords 2 set to be helmed by Wu partner, RZA, the album that GZA promised to fans last year. These hopes were quickly dashed, however, by a series of follow-up messages.
He first explained that the upcoming album would consist of, “a visual and audio element,” before clarifying that he was not referencing the sequel to his 1995 album, Liquid Swords.
“Taking it up a notch before we get Liquid Swords 2 in motion,” he wrote. “Not Liquid Swords 2. Not yet.”
Although GZA made it clear that his next effort will likely not be the album many fans were hoping for, he did appear to indicate that the project is still planned for the future.
With the announcement of Liquid Swords 2, GZA is the third member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan to either release or promise fans a follow-up to a highly-revered earlier release. Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… debut got the encore treatment in 2009 and Ghostface Killah has also made mention of a Supreme Clientele Part II to follow the original, released in 2000.
GZA has yet to reveal any additional information about his newest project, which will be the “Shadowboxin’” rapper’s sixth solo release.
