Blu Talks ‘NoYork’ Album, Warner Brothers Records
Blu talks about his forthcoming major-label debut, expounding on label politics, changes in his sound and what fans should expect.
In a recent interview with HardKnockTV, Blu dished out some details about his forthcoming release with Warner Brothers Records, NoYork, explaining how working with a major label for the first time has influenced his approach to music and what listeners should expect from the album.
“[Being signed to Warner Brothers] hasn’t [changed my approach to making music] actually — it definitely hasn’t,” the California native explained. “I’ve had tons of routes planned out where I can take my career,” he explained, “with Warner it’s just figuring out which route to go.”
“I’ve been trying to get into this electric hip hop feel for a while,” the frequent-Exile collaborator said. He went on to say that this sonic direction was one of the biggest reasons he brought on producers such as Dibiase and Flying Lotus to help with the new project.
When asked if he fears his situation may turn out like Lupe Fiasco’s experience with Atlantic Records — where he was forced to wait a considerable time before releasing his upcoming album, Lasers, and eventually had to agree to a number of compromises to secure a release date — Blu didn’t express any concern. Everything seemed to be in order, he said, “from my talks at the major, we seem like we’re on the same page.”
Although no release date is set for the album, Blu did say that the album is completed and currently in the mixing stage. He indicated that fans should expect a complete album sometime around summer.
In addition, Blu confirmed that himself and producer Exile are working on a second collaborative effort, to follow 2007′s critically-acclaimed Below The Heavens. Without offering a title for the project, he did confirm that it will come after NoYork‘s release.
