Common Working with Lupe Fiasco and Q-Tip
The Chi-town MC-turned-actor, Common, is getting back in the studio — and he’s bringing some friends along for the ride. According to various tweets and reports, Common will be working with Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and Lupe Fiasco for tracks — at least in part as preparation for the release of his new album, The Believer.
“@Common and I will begin working on both his and our standard album this month,” Q-Tip tweeted on Monday. The legendary MC and producer has been dedicating his efforts toward beats as of late, most recently producing a single for his cousin, Consequence, who hails from New York, titled “Got Me Trippin”.
It’s unclear whether Q-Tip’s involvement with Common‘s next effort will be from behind the boards or behind the mic.
In addition, Common recently let his fans know he was working with another respected MC, Lupe Fiasco.
“In the studio with Lupe and [he's] trying to get me to run for Mayor of Chicago,” Common tweeted this week. “The song is called ‘We can do it now’ based on [the Gatorade 'Replay' series],” he tweeted later upon the track’s completion. The Gatorade series he’s referencing seeks out legendary high school sporting events that had contended or controversial outcomes and sets up a second chance for the schools to compete to determine a final outcome.
Fiasco, who has never worked with Common before this track, is still trying to untangle problems surrounding the release of his third studio album, Lasers. After originally announcing that it had been submitted to his label, Atlantic Records, the album has yet to receive a release date. Lupe has since gone on to speak out against Atlantic and warning other MCs not to sign with major record labels.
Most recently, a group of thousands of fans have signed a petition for Atlantic to release Lupe’s record, and have arranged to protest outside of the Atlantic Records office in New York City. The rally, dubbed “Fiasco Friday”, is scheduled to take place on October 15.
There’s no information as to whether the Common and Lupe collaboration will also appear on a future Common album, or if it was created exclusively for the Gatorade series.
Common’s next album is slated to be titled The Believer, and has confirmed collaborations with Kanye West and production from No I.D. (who produced the track with Lupe, according to Common’s later tweets). The Believer will be Common’s ninth studio album. There’s no release date at this time.
