Talib Kweli Announces Release Date for ‘Gutter Rainbows’
Kweli will be stepping away from major labels for his newest release, it was revealed today. Along with the announcement of the release date for his upcoming Gutter Rainbows, it was also made known that the album will be the first released under his own, newly-established imprint.
The follow-up to Talib Kweli’s 2007 solo album, Eardrum, Gutter Rainbows will mark the return of Kweli as a solo artist, after his most-recent outing with producer Hi-Tek (Reflection Eternal) for their 2010 release, Revolutions Per Minute. Rainbows will be released on January 25, 2011, according to a press release sent out today.
The album, which will feature production credits from a slew of well-known and highly-regarded beat-smiths including M-Phazes, Ski Beatz and KHRYSIS!, will also be released independently, under his own imprint which he recently established, the announcement said. Talibra, Kweli’s latest music venture, will be the label backing Rainbows, with marketing and distributing being handled by a third party.
In addition to Rainbows, Kweli is also currently working on another solo album, titled Prisoner of Conscience — a reference to the “conscious rapper” label that he’s been recently vocally unhappy with. There’s no word yet on a release date for the album, nor what label will be picking up the record.
However, Kweli did tell aboveGround in an interview earlier this year that he’s cut ties with Warner Brothers, the label responsible for both Eardrum and Revolutions Per Minute.
“They didn’t promote the album,” he said, speaking specifically about the sophomore LP from Reflection Eternal, which was released last May.
Kweli also released the first single from Rainbows, titled “Cold Rain”. The track can heard below.
