Sage Francis Shares Behind-the-scenes Information About the Creation of His Latest Album ‘LI(F)E’
Mr. Francis unveils some behind-the-scenes information about the creation of his latest record, LI(F)E, an album that represents a pretty big sonic departure from his earlier works.
On his Facebook page this week, Sage Francis, the founder of Strange Famous Records and indie rap veteran, explains to fans how the creation of his latest album was quite different from his previous experiences. In addition, the Rhode Island MC offered up some photographs from the entire process — allowing fans a look at how the circumstances varied wildly from that of his past projects.
“My LI(F)E album came out in May of 2010. It was recorded in Chicago at a place called Engine Music Studios,” wrote Sage. “Unlike any album of mine before it (and most likely after it,) the expenses of this project were through the roof.”
He continued by explaining that he brought in plenty of outside help for L(I)FE, something that he hasn’t done much in the past.
“Since this album is completely devoid of samples, we baked this cake entirely from scratch,” he wrote. “When you hear a crowd of foot stomps throughout the ‘Worry Not’ song, that’s because we recorded a crowd of people stomping their feet through the whole song.”
The current Epitaph artist explained that although he generally likes, “taking shortcuts,” — presumably to save money and keep costs down — this time around he got to experience what it’s like for artists that have a larger budget and spend more money on each of their records.
Sage also shared some photos from his time in Chicago, showing off his living quarters — a small dorm-like area connected directly to the studio — where he stayed for a full month during the album’s creation. He also showed photos of the various instruments that were played live on the album, and the studio itself, which was riddled with chairs, instruments and sheet music.
Sage Francis’ LI(F)E dropped on May 11, 2010 via ANTI- and Epitaph records.
