Five Thousand Dollar-A-Day Fine Imposed For Charitable Mural Painted by Seventh Letter Crew Members
LA’s city attorney cracks down on a mural created for charity.
This week, a secret mural created to benefit the Heal The Bay and Oceans@Risk environmental efforts came under fire from Los Angeles city officials, leading to a fine of $5,000 per day for the owner of the property that houses the work.
According to reports from LA-based street artist REVOK, the mural that was intended to raise awareness about environmental issues has instead become the target of city officials cracking down on illegal (and, in this case, legal) street art and those who perpetrate it.
The Seventh Letter Crew affiliates Risk and Retina were originally commissioned to complete the mural. The two well-known graffiti and street artists were contacted by Adam Corlin, a volunteer for the Heal The Bay organization that works on various projects in an effort to, “make Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean.” He asked the two artists to create the mural outside of a million-dollar home he purchased in Santa Monica.
After months of work on the mural — which was covered by tarps and not visible to the public — the full piece was revealed this week as an effort to draw attention to Corlin’s Oceans@Risk initiative.
“OCEANS AT RISK, HEAL THE BAY, SEA SHEPHERD, MAD SOCIETY, RESTORE AND PROTECT THE WORLDS OCEANS,” the mural read in hieroglyphic letters.
The work was originally scheduled to stay up in Santa Monica through September 17, which marks Heal The Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day. After that, Corlin planned to take the piece on a tour to promote clean oceans and beaches on a broader scale.
Now, Risk, Retina and other LA street artists (including REVOK) are calling on supporters to help preserve the piece. OCeans@Risk is asking that people call the Los Angeles city number (310-458-8201) and leave a message indicating their support for the piece.
