Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Premieres New Tracks Over Beats by J Dilla, Madlib, Oh No
The artist formerly known as Mos Def reveals some of his newest work.
Last week, at a show at New York City’s SOB’s venue, Mos Def, who recently announced that he will be changing his stage moniker to Yasiin Bey, unveiled a number of new tracks. Included in the performance, Yasiin premiered joints with production from the late J Dilla, Madlib and Oh No.
Footage from HipHopBeef.com captured the performance, where he first debuted a new Madlib-produced song, followed by two songs — including one that he called “Sunshine Screw Face” — which featured production from Detroit’s J Dilla, who passed away in 2006. Lastly, the newly-named rapper revealed his work with producer Oh No, using a beat from the California producer’s 2009 album, Dr. No’s Ethiopium.
It’s unclear at this time what Yasiin’s current plans are, although he said in a post-show interview that there isn’t currently a new album ready to be released. He hasn’t released a studio album since 2009′s The Ecstatic. This unveiling may also stir rumors that he will be soon reunited with Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli for a second album under their collective moniker, Black Star. Fans have clamored for a follow-up release to the group’s 1998 Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, and the two have recently revealed new collaborative tracks and also appeared together on Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report.
Stay tuned for more information on Yasiin Bey is it becomes available. Watch footage from last week’s performance below.
